Theotokos refers to the Virgin and Child that derived from Christian religious canon. I used this familiar imagery to depict a mother robin and her chick. The scene shows the baby bird in a straw nest, an allusion to the manger in Christ's birth story. This piece features gold leaf and an intricately patterned background. The frame is metallic gold with warm grey patina and russet accents that pick up the red-orange tones in the painting.
This highly detailed piece is part of my series of stylized and embellished bird portraits, which investigate the concept of veneration and encourage the viewer to contemplate the value we place on individual animal lives.
