Evangeline is a crested ringneck dove with striking blue eyes that inspired the cobalt background of this portrait. She was found outdoors, and is now a member of my studio flock. This portrait is inspired by traditional Byzantine Icons, with gold leaf and a prominent halo. Three-dimensional faux pearls accent the work, as well as script lettering. The vintage frame is repurpose especially for this piece, with cobalt blue and an aged patina over the metallic gold. This highly detailed piece is the first in my series of stylized and embellished bird portraits, which investigate the concept of veneration and encourage the viewer to contemplate the value we place on individual animal lives.
